Hi, I’m Ben – I created this website to write more about topics that interest me, rather than the work-related things that I feel like I should write about.
I love writing, and I first started around 2014 at my other website, thoughtfulleader.com. I wrote literally hundreds of articles about leadership there.
More recently, I realised that I was getting a bit tired of feeling like I needed to write just about leadership, and I wanted to explore other topics. The main topics I’m interested in relate to why humans do the things they do, and why the world is the way it is.
That’s why I created this website. I’m not sure where it’s going really, but I do know that I want to make writing a bigger part of my life. If I can build a following and turn it into something larger, that would be great.
Why write now, when AI can do it for you?
It may seem nonsensical to be doing more writing now, when AI has pretty much made it so that everyone can write better than ever before.
But one thing I have realised is that writing is only partially about the end result – it’s the process that I really enjoy and is most beneficial.
Writing helps me to think through things. With most of the essays on this site, I never really know where they are going to end up – I start with an idea, and then the process of writing helps me to reach some sort of conclusion and sort through my thoughts.
Getting AI to spit out an essay for you is quick and easy, but you won’t learn anything about yourself or the world by doing that.
Obligatory background information.
Ok, so here is some background info about me.
I live in Perth, Western Australia. For work, I’m now a leadership coach and facilitator after starting my career developing software, then moving into a bunch of leadership roles for about 16 years.
I’m married (no kids) and have a dog that has become very expensive mainly due to a bad ear infection, but she’s doing well now.
My favourite city in the world (to visit at least) is Hong Kong, I love playing interesting boardgames (no, not like Monopoly or Risk), watching Rugby Union (I’m a big Wallabies fan), I rehabbed my ruptured ACL non-surgically a few years ago and still play basketball twice per week in amateur competitions.
